The introduction of mandatory e-invoicing in the B2B sector in Germany marks a pivotal turning point in the digital transformation of commercial processes. Since 1 January 2025, all domestic companies must be able to receive electronic invoices – regardless of company size, industry, or turnover. By 2028, the obligation to issue and send e-invoices in accordance with the EN 16931 standard will apply in full.
These national e-invoicing obligations (Germany 2025–2028, France 2026/2027, Italy since 2019, and others) are not isolated measures – they are deliberately preparing businesses and authorities for the next stage: the European Commission’s EU initiative VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA). From 2030, all cross-border B2B transactions within the EU must be reported digitally in real time – the e-invoice will become the mandatory foundation of the European VAT reporting system. Countries such as France and Italy are already considered forerunners of this model.
